Women bear almost all responsibility for meeting basic needs of the family, yet are systematically denied the resources, information and freedom of action they need to fulfil this responsibility. The vast majority of the world's poor are women. Two-thirds of the world's illiterates are female. Of the millions of school age children not in school, the majority are girls. And today, HIV/AIDS is rapidly becoming a woman's disease. In several African countries, more than three-quarters of all young people living with HIV are women.
Taka a look at these statistic:-
Accoding to the UN State of World Population 2008,
· Of the 1 billion people living in absolute poverty around the world (unable to secure basic life necessities), 60% are women and girls. Women own just 1% of the world's wealth.
· Women make up 2/3 of the estimated 876 million adults worldwide who cannot read or write
· Girls make up 70% of the world’s 130 million youth not attending school.
· Women contribute 2/3 of the world’s working hours, yet earn only 10% of the income.
· 14 million girls aged 15-19 give birth in developing countries each year.
· Every minute of every day, a pregnant woman dies from mostly preventable causes.
· At least one out of every three women and girls will be severely beaten in her lifetime.
It is really devastating that there is no community in this world untouched by these issues. Stand strong and behold, it is now the time for us to come together, holding our hands and make a difference.
